REPORTS linking Gary Caldwell as the next manager of Oldham Athletic are wide of the mark, The Oldham Times understands.
The former Celtic and Scotland defender and Wigan Athletic manager left his role as interim lead coach of Newcastle United’s Under 23s, leading to rumours that he was destined for Boundary Park to replace head coach Keith Curle following a poor start to the League Two season.
But The Oldham Times understands there has not been any contact between Latics’ and Caldwell.
Indeed, Oldham owner Abdallah Lemsagam has come out in support of head coach Keith Curle despite a disastrous start to the League Two campaign, with five defeats in their opening six games.
In an open letter to fans in which a number of matters were addressed, Lemsagam wrote: “I think Keith is a good Head Coach for us and has the right experience to help us do well in League Two.”
After leaving Newcastle, Caldwell tweeted: “Enjoyed immensely being back on the grass coaching at the club that gave me my start in football. Thank you to all the players and staff for making me feel so welcome.
“Wish you and all the Newcastle fans the best of luck for the rest of the season. A fantastic football club. Looking forward now to my next challenge in the game which I will announce in the next few weeks.”
