Mat Hudson has revealed the impact that Scott Davies has had on Oldham Athletic - and not just among the keepers.

The goalkeeper coach reunited with Micky Mellon, his former Tranmere Rovers boss, in the summer following Steve Collis' move to Notts County. But Hudson says it is not just the stoppers who are benefiting from having the 37-year-old on the backroom team, but the outfield players too.

"Scotty's been brilliant, he's not just a goalkeeper coach he's a massive part of the dressing room," said Hudson.

"The lads thrive off him and his character. He's obviously played an awful lot of games, he's played for the gaffer so he knows what the gaffer expects, he knows how to win, he's been a leader, he's been a captain, so that's something that I'm trying to bring into my game as well, learning off him.

"I'm really enjoying working with him on and off the pitch. He's been massive for me. This season's a lot different to last year where I'm probably not as busy in games, which I have found hard, but Scotty's been really good for me with that in helping me through the games.

"I'm a young goalkeeper and I want to keep learning my way in the game with his help."

And Hudson explained Davies' influence on the training ground paid dividends in earning his sixth clean sheet in the league this season with Saturday's goalless draw at Barnet, most notably a sprawled save with his legs to deny Bailey Hobson.

"We've been working on one v ones on the training pitch and just not committing too early," he said.

"If I come out and charge early it kind of leaves the chip, if you like, so it's just about waiting. As soon as he took that touch I was ready to pounce on him and close him down and made the save."
