Saturday was one of those days that make you remember how special it can be to be a fan of Oldham Athletic.

Almost losing my voice singing all afternoon alongside 2,200 others in the sold out away end, celebrating a fully deserved 2-1 victory against a higher division opponent and with a performance to match, made for a brilliant day out on Merseyside.

Pre-match discussion was dominated by one man and once James Norwood was named in the starting XI, he was always going to score, and he did so to complete a superb flowing move which ended with him being set up by a sublime back heel by outstanding debutant Sam Clucas.

With all that had happened in the previous week, it was fantastic to see Norwood reach the heights in performance that he did against his former club and, as Micky Mellon alluded to post-match, this is the Norwood we want to see more of going forward.

Clucas himself was replaced after a fantastic hour on the pitch and he looks like he could make a huge contribution to our season. His replacement, Jes Uchegbulam, scored the winner as well as never giving the Tranmere backline a moment’s rest.

It’s very difficult though to actually not mention every single player as none of them can be faulted for an outstanding team performance in which every single one of them looked more than capable of making the step up to the Football League.

Even at 1-0 down I wasn’t in any doubt that we would come back and win the game, especially after the gaffer instigated the change in shape, and so it proved as the hosts rarely troubled us, no matter what Tranmere manager Nigel Adkins says.

Indeed, I would go as far as saying we would have won by a bigger margin had it not been for some unbelievable officiating with the referee making some utterly bizarre decisions, including disallowing a perfectly good goal for us.

So, into the second round we go and a visit to Leyton Orient gives us a real chance of a massive third round tie.

Before that though, we are back to league action and a visit to fellow promotion challengers, Barnet.

There is a real excitement and buzz around the club at the moment and the togetherness between the staff, players and fans is something that we haven’t had for, I would say, a decade at least.

November has a number of big occasions such as the Bees and of course Rochdale away later in the month, so there isn’t a better time for that positivity to be everywhere.

With Mellon teasing a new signing after the weekend’s win - looking like it will finally be you know who up front - and results and form being excellent, that current excited feeling is primed to continue too.
