Four points from two long trips down south to Sutton and Maidenhead is not a bad return, although the draw on Tuesday night was ultimately disappointing with a number of decent chances squandered against a far inferior opposition.

On Saturday, we gave a superb performance against a very solid National League side in Sutton. We really dominated from start to finish so much so that it wouldn't have been unfair if we’d have won the game by a few more goals, especially with the chances that we created.

At the back we were strong, apart from another goal conceded from a set piece for their equaliser, and we never really looked like we weren’t going to go on and win the game.

Mike Fondop added to his tally once more and it was also great to see James Norwood come on and influence proceedings, not only with the goal to kill the game off but also with his all round play. As he approaches full fitness, I’m sure that influence will continue to grow too.

The midfield dominated and Josh Lundstram deserves another mention for what was, for me, a man of the match performance, continuing the fine run of form he is on.

Charlie Raglan scored the second at Sutton and also the equaliser on Tuesday with a very similar header and I really felt that we would kick on in Maidenhead from there and take the three points again, despite having been 2-0 down.

It wasn’t meant to be though and we were left to rue our bad luck for both Magpies goals, although it does have to be said the defending and goalkeeping could have been better on both occasions to take away the element of luck.

We were also unlucky in hitting both the post and bar as we looked for the goals to get something from the game. However, we do still seem to be missing that clinical edge.

We are making plenty of chances and these two games show that, but we are still missing too many. Once that clicks into place, we will start to really fly.

This squad though has the right mentality to respond to setbacks, such as going two down even when being the better team as against Maidenhead, and, whilst we can’t afford to do that regularly, that grit and determination will hold us in good stead on occasions when it is needed.

With only Dagenham left before a fortnight off league action, returning with the massive game at Barnet, Saturday is an important fixture to keep the positivity in the league going through that mini-break.
