Messages of support have been sent to former Oldham Athletic striker Matt Smith following the tragic death of his four-month-old son.

Yesterday (Friday, October 18), it was announced that Smith's son, Madison, had passed away, leading to a number of messages of support from the Latics and other clubs Smith previously played for.

A statement posted on Oldham Athletic's Twitter, formerly known as X, page read: "As a club, we send our love and deepest condolences to Matt Smith and his family, following the incredibly sad passing of his four-month old son, Madison."

Smith was a fans' favourite when he played for the Latics between 2011 and 2013 and nearly re-joined the club in the summer, according to manager Micky Mellon, before he decided to hang up his boots.

Other tributes from Smith's former clubs included Millwall posting on their Twitter page: "Millwall Football Club sends its unconditional love and support to Matt Smith, and his family and friends, following the passing of his four-month old son, Madison. We are with you every step of the way, Smudger."

Meanwhile, Queens Park Rangers posted: "Everyone at QPR sends their deepest condolences, love and support to Matt Smith and family following the tragic passing of his baby son, Madison. We’re all with you Smudger"

Smith's father-in-law is former player and current Blackpool manager Steve Bruce, who the club said will not be at their match against Barnsley today.

A statement from Blackpool read: “The club can announce that head coach Steve Bruce will not be in attendance at tomorrow’s fixture against Barnsley due to the tragic passing of his four-month-old grandson Madison.

“Everyone at the football club send their love to Steve and his family. We ask that their privacy is respected as they come to terms with this sudden and unexpected loss in their family.”

Alex Bruce, Smith's brother-in-law and assistant manager at Salford City, will also not be present for his side's match against Crawley has he mourns the family's loss.
