It is said that sequels are rarely as good as the original.

But Mike Fondop defied that notion to secure a statement win for Oldham Athletic.

His dad's first visit to the UK has been a year in the planning. When it comes to seeing his son at his best and on fire in front of goal it has been timed to perfection in a two-game week.

Saturday's header that sealed the win against Yeovil was glorious. The striker went one better to get one over fellow promotion hopefuls in midweek to spark more emotional scenes at Boundary Park after chesting down James Norwood's flick-on, turning and firing a spectacular, unstoppable left foot volley past Jed Ward from the edge of the D.

Forest Green Rovers are a team that want an immediate return to the Football League following relegation last season, and - level on points with leaders Barnet going into the game - are going the right way about it under Steve Cotterill.

But in-form Fondop - clearly buoyed by the presence of his dad - is fuelling Latics' current form, and his team-mates defended his early goal as if their lives depended on it. Fellow Cameroonian Manny Monthe in particular played a starring role in this all-action thriller to secure a second consecutive shut-out that demonstrated Latics' adaptability at finding different ways to win.

"I knew it was going to be a tight game and I knew there wasn't going to be much in it and I knew we were going to learn a lot about our team tonight and we learnt that we've got guts and determination and we've got the fight and the fire to want to fight to try to win games for Oldham," said manager Micky Mellon.

"The supporters have seen that and were right behind it; great atmosphere, and a lovely night for a game of football. I want to be involved in games of football like that for Oldham, that's what the supporters deserve and that's what this football club deserves, a team to represent them properly like we did tonight."

Mellon set up with a back three as has been his preference, but tweaked the personnel with Shaun Hobson coming in at right sided centre half and Reagan Ogle pushing on at right wing back, mirrored by the revitalised Mark Kitching on the opposite side. Teddy Jenks hit a post soon after Fondop scored and Forest Green continued to get into good areas as they chased the equaliser. But the back five put up a brick wall to protect goalkeeper Mat Hudson and the clean sheet.

The last time these teams met at Boundary Park it was a 10-goal spectacle with Selim Benachour at the helm and the points shared. Latics are a very different proposition these days. And a first win over Forest Green Rovers in nine attempts has helped to turn this sequel into a series of good results.

"I've felt the momentum from pre-season. I knew," said Mellon.

"I've been in the game a long time and I've seen enough to make me happy. I just kept focused, knew that we had good lads and knew that we had a good team and knew that if we get them fit, get them organised and keep that togetherness we would be able to win games of football.

"It's 11 games in now so we're able to do that now, we've got to keep going.

"Players will need to get rested now. We've got a game at a mad time on Saturday night (5.30pm at Ebbsfleet) but we'll get adjusted and we'll adapt and we'll go down and try to get a result down there as well."
