A visit to Woking and Oldham played a very good hand against the Cards, being the dominant side throughout and easing to a 3-1 win.

The only surprise really was that it wasn’t a bigger margin of victory with Tom Conlon, Charlie Raglan, James Norwood, Mike Fondop and Joe Garner all missing good chances to extend the lead still further.

This was a solid performance from start to finish though and showed some of the desired consistency across 90 minutes that we’ve been lacking, even though we didn’t hit the heights of some of the short spells of the last few weeks.

Raglan was superb marshalling the defence alongside Manny Monthe and the outstanding Reagan Ogle, who along with Mark Kitching, has really stepped up and made a big difference to the side both defensively and offensively.

Indeed, it was Kitching himself who set up the first after a fine move which saw him place a cross onto the head of Josh Lundstram.

Oli Hammond’s work rate behind Fondop in the first half, and Fondop and Norwood in the second, was a real boost as well as we have really missed the injured Harry Charsley in there. His closing down and pressurising of the Woking backline and midfield never gave them a moment’s rest and regularly kept us on the front foot.

Both Fondop and Norwood deserved their goals, and yes, I do think our number 30 should get the benefit of the doubt and be awarded the second goal. It was also great to see Joe Garner get a 15-minute cameo on his return to fitness.

Post-game and hearing the Woking commentators’ praise of us when they stated we were good value for the win and should have had more was very interesting.

Having that external opinion on us, away from our fans - all of whom, including me, have an emotional attachment to the club - really helps on occasion to put into perspective where we are and the progress we are making.

The next stage of that progress is consistency in performance and results across matches and there’s no better time to do that than two home matches in quick succession with first Yeovil Town and then Forest Green Rovers making the long journeys north to Boundary Park.

The Forest Green match falls on the day of my 40th birthday. Surely it’s not too much to ask for two wins over the weekend to help me celebrate my milestone?
