James Norwood will be monitored before Tuesday night's trip to Halifax Town after suffering a knock in this afternoon's draw with Southend United.

The striker was seen limping after going for a 50-50 ball with Southend goalkeeper Collin Andeng Ndi as Latics chased a late winner.

Norwood played his first 90 minutes of the season, having missed the whole of pre-season with a calf injury and been restricted to an hour in his first two games.

And manager Micky Mellon he had taken a risk in keeping last season's top scorer on for the duration of the game.

"He only joined us a couple of weeks ago so actually I've been a bit reckless playing him for 90 minutes," the Scot admitted.

"He wasn't here to play 90 minutes, he's not ready to do that, but he dug in and he kept going.

"He's a clever lad and he knows what runs to make and what not to make, but I didn't really want to do that because I want to keep him available for as long as possible.

"But he's gone out and done us a shift.

"Did we want him to go 90 (minutes)? Probably not, the boy's 34, not done any pre-season but he's dug in for us and kept going. But we've no option, we're chasing a game. We kept fighting."

Of the knock that Norwood sustained late on, Mellon added: "He went one-v-one with the goalkeeper and the keeper's done what keepers do, he's lifted his studs high to protect himself and Norwood's collided with him. I think it's an impact injury so we'll see how that is."

Norwood managed to complete the game, but Latics had to make a 16th minute substitution following an injury to midfielder Harry Charsley.

"Charsley had a bit of a groin injury early on so that was forced on us," said Mellon.
