The Bank Holiday Monday game between Avro FC and Mossley AFC optimized the old cliché - ‘a game of two halves’ - as the bore draw after 45 minutes livened up to become a 2-2 thriller, writes Stan Ashcroft.
Both teams came into the game on the back of 3-0 defeats and each sought to bounce back from their poor performances as they faced off at the Vestacare Stadium.
It was a cagey first half with few chances for either side.
Avro’s Aaron Grewal started brightly, he had one long range effort bound for the top corner superbly saved by Mossley keeper Fin Madigan.
Avro FC also had an opportunity on the counter attack - with a three vs three - towards the end of the half but the final product fizzled out with a soft shot on goal.
Mossley came back onto the field in the second half with fresh legs as Shepherd made way for Efunnga in defence.
It wasn’t long before the Lilywhite’s number nine - Eric Yahaya - broke the deadlock in the 51st minute with a strong header following a corner.
But Avro didn’t panic - they reacted in the perfect manner six minutes later as Kyle Hawley produced a quality striker’s finish from the right-hand side of the box - placing the ball accurately into the top right corner with plenty of power.
The Ro’s momentum continued as they kept high pressure on Mossley’s midfield and backline which was led by Kane Hickman’s energy and quality in the middle of the pitch.
The hard work paid off as Liam Ellis was able to force himself through the Lilywhite’s defense and carry the ball forward from just inside the opposition’s half.
Ellis powered through the backline with the momentum of a rugby player as he outclassed the visiting defence.
He was cool, calm and collected with the one on one which presented itself as he was able to slot the ball home - to make it 2-1 to Avro in the 63rd minute.
With the home crowd quietly optimistic that their side had done enough to win their second home game of the season - Mossley kept the pressure on and were able to win a freekick 40 yards out from goal in the 78th minute.
A floating ball was aimed into the far post and Reece Webb-Foster was there to meet it with a first-time volley - equalising for the Lilywhites.
It was a desperate battle in the final stages of the game where the majority of yellow cards of the game were gifted out.
Within the five minutes of added time the Lilywhites appealed for a penalty but shouts were quickly waved away from referee Chris Porter — as the ball trickled out for a corner.
2-2 was the final score as history has a habit of repeating itself when it comes to these sides as the last three meetings have finished level.
Avro go to Bootle on Saturday seeking a second win of the season.
