AFTER Oldham secured their biggest win of the season against Newcastle, Sean Long admitted selecting a line-up for this weekend’s crunch match against Keighley will be tough, writes Kasey Smith.
The Roughyeds boss made a whole host of changes, giving a debut to Jumah Sambou, as well as handing Cian Tyrer his first start in over a month and Jamie Ellis his first since May.
Also making their return to the squad were George Hirst, Joe Wardle and Danny Craven.
Craven was feared to be out for the season when he went off injured in the 14-10 win over Rochdale – a big boost for Oldham who could clinch the title this weekend.
“All the lads that came in all played really well and I’ll have a selection headache for Keighley,” said Long.
“Jumah was outstanding, and he hasn’t played for over 12 months, but he’s come back and he really took his chance.
“All of our back five did well, I thought they were outstanding. We spoke about Newcastle’s kicking game, it’s quite unique, and our back line did a great job defending those midfield kicks and bombs.
“They gave us loads of energy in the back field with their yardage carries and they ended up finishing the tries”
Long also played tribute to captain/assistant Jordan Turner who scored a try on what was his 400th career appearance.
“Jordan was outstanding, as he has been all year,” he added. “He has a calming influence on the squad and it was good to celebrate his milestone.
“During the week, he was making sure the lads didn’t drop their standards against Newcastle.
“And I spoke to the lads before about doing it for JT and his family and it was a big occasion for him.”
