KIERAN Dixon smashed a club record for the most points scored in a single game in Sunday’s 84-0 drubbing of Newcastle Thunder, Kasey Smith.

Dixon’s relentless performance included a hat-trick of tries as well as 12 successful conversions out of a possible 15, bringing his total to 36 points overall.

That total surpasses the previous record of 34, set by Andy Ballard in 2009 and matched by Chris Baines in the same year as well as Lewis Palfrey in 2015.

It was a day of milestones for Oldham with Jordan Turner touching down for two tries in what was his 400th career appearance.

As well as that, Jumah Sambou – who hasn’t played a game of rugby league for over a year – made his long-awaited debut for Oldham and what a debut it was.

The 23-year-old has been beset by injury issues this year but recovered to give boss Sean Long a real selection headache ahead of next week’s trip to Keighley where a win would clinch the League One title.

Another knocking on Long’s door will be Tyrer who, on his first match in six weeks, scored five tries in what was a breathless Oldham display.

The first score came after three minutes gone as Oldham averaged a try scored every five minutes.

Sambou finished off a slick shift of passing for the first try while Tyrer dived over to double the score after a lofted Jamie Ellis pass.

There was good work from Phoenix Laulu-Togaga’e for Oldham’s third as he drew defenders in and subsequently offloaded to Dixon who touched down, making it 16-0 in as many minutes.

The tries kept coming and it was the Ellis-to-Tyrer exchange once again that came up trumps for Oldham.

A strong Joe Wardle carry, who refused to be tackled, paved the way for Ted Chapelhow to get on the scoresheet while Jordan Turner capped off a great Oldham move, ignited by Sambou’s line break and impressive 40-metre dash.

Oldham went for the jugular in the second half and after a burst of speed from Sambou he flew through the Newcastle line for his second try.

Ellis then fired a cross-field kick which Tyrer acrobatically caught and grounded for Oldham’s eighth.

The best of the lot came immediately after when Tyrer shrugged off three Newcastle tacklers to offload to Laulu-Togaga’e. From inside his own 30-metre line, Laulu-Togaga’e sprinted through and then offloaded to Bailey Aldridge, who ran all the way to score under the sticks.

Another line break followed, resulting in a try for Craig Kopczak – and in the final 20 minutes Oldham scored five more.

Dixon scored two in quick succession, followed by a pair from Tyrer and Laulu-Togaga’e capped off the scoring with a try just before the hooter.
