AVRO FC kick off their NPL West campaign at home to Atherton Collieries on Saturday with two new additions among their ranks, writes Rob Currell.

Full back Chiekh Thiam has put pen to paper after impressing in pre-season while winger Dillon Edmundson has teamed up with managerial duo Mike Norton and David Birch having played under them at Abbey Hey last season.

“I’ve enjoyed it since I’ve come here and the squad has helped me get back fit,”said Thiam. “It is good to be able to say that I am enjoying my footy again.

“I can’t wait to start the season with the lads and hopefully have a successful campaign under the new managers.”

“Chiekh really impressed me when he joined us last season from Rylands,” said the first team match day secretary Mark Hutton.

“He came into the team at the back end of the campaign and made a big contribution with some great performances.

“We are looking forward to seeing him over a full season.”

Edmundson, who can play as a striker or winger, is happy to link up with the Ro managerial duo again.

“I spent last season with Birchy and Norts who welcomed me straight away to the set-up at Abbey Hey,” he said.

“We got along really well and later when they asked me to come to Avro, I thought it was too good an opportunity to pass up.”

“The squad has a lot of experience both in the players and staff so I wanted to come and be a part of that.

“So far it has been a great environment and everyone has had a laugh which makes it a nice place to be.

“Everyone has been very welcoming.”

Meanwhile, Avro will face Bury in the FA Cup premliminary round at the Vestacare Stadium on Saturday, August 17, (kick-off 3pm).

The Shakers booked their place in the next round following a 4-2 win at Congleton last Saturday.
