Micky Mellon is looking at the bigger picture after Latics were pegged back by Warrington Town after a dominant hour at Cantilever Park.

Mike Fondop’s brace, plus an own goal from former Oldham man Peter Clarke, saw Micky Mellon’s side gain a commanding lead.

The hosts got back into the game in the final 25 minutes after a host of Latics substitutions, with Josh Miles scoring a hat trick.

Mellon made three changes from Radcliffe, with Jesurun Uchegbulam, Oli Hammond and Dan Gardner coming into the side.

The first chances fell to Latics, with Dan Atherton making smart stops to deny Hammond and then Harry Charsley after a scramble in the box.

The opener came five minutes before the break when Tom Conlon picked out Fondop with a pinpoint cross and his header went in off Clarke.

Latics doubled their advantage moments later after another dangerous cross, this time from Uchegbulam, and the forward make no mistake.

The third came on the hour mark when Hammond’s strike was blocked and fell to Fondop, who provided a ruthless finish.

After the changes, Warrington got back into the contest through Miles’ quickfire double. His first came after nicking the ball off Magnus Norman in the box and the second was a simple finish from close range.

The equaliser came when Miles picked up the ball on the right flank, cut inside and curled an effort past Norman.

"The first team were only ever going to play an hour and with the young lads and other squad players, it is important that I find time for them as well because we don't have any other games so I am just trying to keep them fit,” said Mellon after the final whistle.

He added: “It has been good to expose the young players to the pre-season games and it has showed them - when they went to the likes of Southport, Warrington Rylands and today - how you need to do better, how you need to do a wee bit more.

"There will be a few disappointed with that last half hour but me, as the manager, I'm pleased to get to that hour with no injuries. They played very well, were very comfortable and looked super fit.

“They knocked the ball around well on a difficult pitch, so I'm really pleased with them. They're in a good place.

"The game against Shrewsbury will put the last little bits fitness wise and being tested for that first game of the season."
