Latics will look to take their pre-season up a notch when they play their second friendly tonight (Tuesday).

Micky Mellon's men travel to take on Warrington Rylands, with the kick-off time brought forward slightly to 7.30pm.

And after an intense week of training at St Andrew's, the Scot is looking to put their hard work into action on the pitch again, after kicking off their pre-season programme with a 1-0 win at home to League One newcomers Stockport County.

"We're looking for the same again. Fitness, get on the ball and play, pass it, try to score some goals, try to defend well and find out more about ourselves. We're finding out all the time what we need to do to try to improve," said Latics boss Mellon.

"I think we came out after 30 minutes saying we need to get on the ball a bit more and have more spells of possession, then after 30 minutes we had a couple of moves and we started to move towards that.

"It was a pleasing performance and a good finish to a really good week."

He added: "We'll look at the minutes. Some played 45, some played 60, Josh (Lundstram) played them all, so we'll balance that and just try to build on the fitness levels, the sharpness and how we want to play as a team."

Rylands finished fourth in the Northern Premier League Premier Division last season but lost their play-off semi final with Marine.

Admission at Rylands' Gorsey Lane ground is £5 for adults, £3 for over 60s and under 18s and £1 for U16s.
