Micky Mellon believes newest signing Josh Kay ticks a lot of boxes for Oldham Athletic.

The 27-year-old today became Latics’ second signing of the summer, teaming up with the club on their first day back for pre-season.

Kay was a free agent after coming to the end of his contract at AFC Fylde, penning a two-year deal at Boundary Park.

And Mellon, who has previously worked with the midfield man at Tranmere, believes he will add quality to the squad.

On his latest summer capture, the Latics boss said: “We’ve been looking for that player who can operate in wide areas and can help provide width high up the pitch.

“Josh will be able to do that, he has been successful in winning promotion from this league before and he has also played a lot of football in League Two.

“I have worked with Josh before, he can score goals and is a strong and committed boy.

“We wanted to add some athleticism to the side and he will definitely bring that as well.”

Kay started his professional career at Fylde and has had three spells with the club.

His first ended after he earned a move to then-Championship club Barnsley, where his two seasons at Oakwell included loans spells back at Fylde, and also with Tranmere.

Kay had a season in League Two with Chesterfield before joining Barrow and helping them to be crowned National League champions in 2020.
