Oldham Athletic have named former Tranmere and Fleetwood goalkeeper Scott Davies as their new goalkeeper coach.

The 37-year-old is the latest recruit to manager Micky Mellon's backroom staff, following the departure of goalkeeper coach Steve Collis.

Davies, who retired from professional football in 2022 after 450 games, joins Latics from Fleetwood, where he was academy goalkeeper coach.

And he described the opportunity to reunite with Mellon as an opportunity that he couldn't turn down.

“I worked with the manager at both Fleetwood and Tranmere, and as a player I’d say that I went from a boy to a man under him. To be able to make this next step with him in my coaching journey is something I’m looking forward to," he said.

“Micky’s record in football speaks for itself but for me, more importantly, he is a fantastic person. He is a real leader and I’m relishing the opportunity to work with him again.

“Being successful in this league is about desire, work-ethic and honesty. They are the traits we want to see in players and as a staff we want to be able to give them our experience so they can take things forward for us.”

Davies, who will work with senior keepers Mat Hudson and Magnus Norman, added: "I’ve been back at Fleetwood recently as it’s a club I know well, coaching the U21s and helping with the first team.

“Ultimately this was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down and you’ve only got to look around to see that the club is ready to go again. I’ve had success as a player and I want that now as a coach.

“Both Matt and Magnus are fantastic goalkeepers. I’ve known about them both before this opportunity.

"Matt did very well last season after earning the shirt, Magnus is an excellent goalkeeper in his own right, and I’m looking forward to getting to know them both.

“I’m really pleased to be here, it’s a massive football club and I’ve come to work for a manager who I have got a lot of love and respect for.

“I spent a lot of time in my playing career under the manager. I know what he brings to a football club, it’s an exciting time for me and I want to be part of a staff which can put a team together that can achieve the things this club deserves.”
