Mark Shelton has today left Oldham Athletic by mutual consent and signed for Barnet.

The midfielder joined Latics in January 2023 and went on to make 35 league appearances, but only twice under manager Micky Mellon.

The 27-year-old has not featured at all since November last year.

The Oldham Times understands that Shelton was keen to leave to seek other playing opportunities during the second half of last season, but it is only now that an agreement between the player and the club has been reached.

A club statement read: "The club would like to thank Mark for his contributions over the past two season and wish him all the best in the future."

Shelton was signed from Hartlepool United, where he had made over 100 appearances and helped the club win promotion back to the Football League in 2021, having previously won promotion with Salford City.

On completing his move to Barnet Shelton said: “I’m really happy to get a deal over the line.

"I’ve spoken to the gaffer a few times and his enthusiasm for me joining was a major factor in my decision.

"Barnet had a brilliant campaign last season and I want to play my part in getting the club back into the Football League.”

Barnet manager Dean Brennan, for whom Shelton is his ninth summer signing, added: “I’m delighted with this one! We tried to sign Shelts several times last season.

“He’s a player that I have admired for a long time. He’s a great character, hugely experienced and his mentality and attributes will help upgrade our midfield.”

Shelton penned a two-and-a-half year deal at Boundary Park, and scored twice in his 35 appearances, but fell out of favour under manager Mellon within a year of his move from the north east.
