Avro manager Alex Frost remains extremely positive following a 1-1 draw away at West Didsbury and Chorlton on Tuesday night which leaves title rivals Vauxhall Motors in pole position to clinch the only automatic promotion place available in the North West Counties Premier Division, writes Liam Bambridge.
The home side deservedly went in front five minutes before the break, when JJ Kirongozi’s effort from the edge of the area skidded into the corner of the net. However, Avro came back strongly after the break, and eventually gained their reward when Louis Potts’ ninth goal in eleven games secured a point.
"I thought we probably just edged it overall, so I was disappointed not to pick up the win’, admitted Frost. "However, West are a good side who have had an excellent season, and I thought they defended very well in that second half. I would have happily taken a point here if you had offered it to me back in August, but obviously in the context of our current situation, it feels like two points dropped."
League leaders Vauxhall Motors’ 1-0 success at Bury AFC means that they now hold a two point advantage at the top of the table, with the additional benefit of a game in hand after the league disciplinary committee’s decision to allow them to replay a game against Winsford United in which they were beaten when the two sides first met last month.
"It’s a big boost for them, of course, but ultimately we are just concentrating on ourselves’, said Frost. "We have three games left, and as long as we win all three, we have a great chance of finishing in the top two. That would be an amazing achievement for a club of this size."
If Avro were to finish in second place, they would earn themselves a trip to a side from the league above for a one game play-off to determine whether they would be promoted.
However, before that can become a reality, they make their first ever trip to the Isle of Man this Saturday evening. The regular season concludes with two home games, the first being a potential title showdown against the Motormen on Saturday 15th April.
