Avro manager Alex Frost admits that is relishing the prospect of taking on Vauxhall Motors in this weekend’s top of the table clash at the van Eupen Arena, after his side came from behind to record a fourth successive league win with a 2-1 victory against Ashton Athletic on Tuesday night.
Ongoing issues with the floodlights at Ashton’s Brocstedes Park home meant that the game had to be played at Burscough’s New Victoria Park ground, and as with their last visit there in September, Avro fell behind to a side currently languishing in the relegation zone when Darren Brannigan fired the ‘home’ side in front.
However, they were level by half time when Kane Wallwork rose highest to head home a Jake Cottrell corner from the right, and after dominating the second half, they finally found a winner with 10 minutes remaining.
Adam Owen’s low cross from the right eventually found its way to Michael Afuye at the far post, and he hammered a right foot shot into the bottom corner to secure the three points and keep his side third in the table
Frost has moved to strengthen his squad ahead of the trip to the Wirral to face the side currently six points clear in second place in the Premier Division, but having played a game more. Lancaster City striker Enock Likoy has signed dual registration forms and made his debut on Tuesday night, whilst the experienced Courtney Meppen-Walter has also joined on loan from Northern Premier League side Radcliffe FC.
“I am delighted that we have been able to bring these two in’, said Frost. “Enock showed what he is all about against Ashton - he is big, strong and quick, he has an excellent first touch and he works hard off the ball. I thought he really did well in his first game for us.
“Courtney is one of the best teammates I have ever had from a technical point of view - he was in the same Ashton United side as myself earlier in his career.
“His range of passing is superb, he is another really strong lad, and he has a wealth of experience which can only benefit us at this crucial stage of our season.
“We are delighted that he has chosen to spend the next month with us, as a number of other clubs at our level and above were interested in taking him temporarily, and we are excited to see what he will bring to the team.”
