Last Saturday’s game against Sheffield did nothing to change my mood of previous weeks and I, together with every one of you no doubt, was left very frustrated as we managed to grasp defeat from the jaws of victory.

It was certainly a game that was there for the taking, and one that we should have won without doubt.

That fact was made worse by the number of Eagles staff and officials that underlined that after the game.

There is no doubt that, at present, we are low on confidence and that is affecting some players more than others.

What is also equally obvious is that we need to fight through this period and we will come out at the other end.

At the risk of repeating myself, we know how tough this division is and as such we need to accept that you have to work very hard to get the wins.

What we can’t afford to be doing is gifting teams points during a game, like we did against Sheffield, because the end result is exactly what happened last week – a loss.

The lads are working hard during training, and it is a source of immense frustration to Matt (Diskin, head coach) that what they are being coached – and doing – in training is then not being done on the field of play when it counts.

As the club’s Covid officer, I am at every training session so I see it too and it is very hard to equate that with what is happening on game day at present.

However, and fortunately, or unfortunately as some may say, we have been here before so we know that in time the bounce of the ball will go our way, a referee’s decision will go our way and before you know it we will have got that elusive win.

The old saying of ‘you make your own luck’ is certainly true to a degree, but you can tip the pendulum in your favour by hard work and determination, and we have that in our camp.

This Sunday sees us head up to Newcastle who, after being promoted through the back door to the Championship, have now gone full-time in an effort to maintain their Championship status.

That is a marker of how important clubs see being in this division and their recent recruitment backs that up – with more to come we are led to believe.

They have a very wealthy owner, and it just underlines the disparity in this division between the rich and the rest of us!

Make no mistake though we will be going there to win, and fingers crossed...
