An Oldham man has been jailed after a series of thefts and assaults on security guards.

Dean English, of Lyon Street, Shaw, appeared at Manchester Magistrates' Court on October 25 to be sentenced for three counts of thefts, two counts of assault by beating and one count of racially aggravated intentional harassment.

The 42-year-old's crimes began on March 17, when he assaulted a security guard at an Asda shop in Shaw.

On April 8, English committed the first of two thefts at the Co-op store on Rochdale Road in Royton, where he stole £25 worth of beer.

Weeks later, on April 21, he stole between £250 and £300 worth of chocolate from the same shop, before the stealing a number of items from a Heron Foods store in Oldham.

On October 23, English was at Middleton Shopping Centre where he assaulted one security guard and racially abused another.

English pleaded guilty to all his crimes and was sentenced to 10 months in prison.

He was also ordered to pay £300 in compensation to the security guards.
