With today, Thursday, marking Guinness World Record Day 2024, we've crafted a list of the records set in Oldham and by people from the borough.

From sporting wonders to medical miracles, the town and its residents have seen their fair share of historical events.

The Guinness World Records is an annually published book that recognises record-breaking human achievements from around the world.

Every year since 2004, Guinness World Record Day marks the book becoming the best selling copyright book of all time and has become a "much-anticipated" celebration which inspires amazing record-breaking challenges.

First test-tube baby

Oldham Royal Hospital was the site of the historic and revolutionary birth of Louise Brown, the first ever successful IVF case.

Louise was delivered by cesarean at 11.47pm on July 25, 1978 to her mother Lesley and father John.

Lesley and John Brown had been trying to conceive naturally for nine years, but experienced complications due to Lesley having blocked fallopian tubes.

On November 10, 1997, Lesley underwent a procedure which is now known as in vitro fertilisation (IVF).

Louise's younger sister Natalie Brown, was conceived four years later also by IVF and became the 40th baby in the world to be born through the method.

Most points scored in a rugby Super League career

Oldhamer and rugby hero Kevin Sinfield set the world record for the most points scored in a Super League career while playing for Leeds Rhinos between September 13, 1998 and March 14, 2014.

The rugby legend was born in Oldham in 1980 and while they are not listed in the list of Oldham records, he also holds records as the third highest scorer in English Rugby League history and the highest score in Leeds Rhinos' history

The superstar is also one of only two players to ever lead a team to win three consecutive Super League titles.

Sinfield is now the skills and kicking coach for the England rugby union team.

He is about to undertake a Christmas fundraiser for motor neurone disease (MND) research after loosing his teammate and friend, Rob Burrow, following a long battle with the disease.

Leeds Rhinos said the challenge has been called "running home for Christmas, 7 in 7 in 7" as the team will visit seven regions across Great Britain and Northern Ireland, covering 50km per day in 7km blocks and hoping to raise £777,777.

Frank Rothwell's records

Oldham Athletic chairman, founder of Oldham business giant Manchester Cabins and world record breaker, Frank Rothwell, has undertaken many challenges over the years.

He first set three records between December 12, 2020 and February 6, 2021 when he rowed across the Atlantic Ocean solo aged 70 to raise funds for Alzheimer's Research UK.

This feat made him the oldest person to row any ocean, the oldest person to row across the Atlantic solo and the oldest person to row across any ocean solo.

But he wasn't done yet. Three years later aged 73, Frank took off again across the Atlantic and beat his own records.

During his first journey he raised a huge £1.1m and added a further £253,000 in his second, with all the funds going to Alzheimers Research UK.

Frank fundraised for Alzheimer's research as he lost two people to the disease, his brother-in-law Roger and his close friend Phil, and wanted to raise money to help find a cure.

Most expensive bottle of gin

In 2018, The Old Bell Inn bought a 70cl bottle of gin for an astounding £4,000 along with a 3cl decanter.

The bottle of Morus LXIV gin was made from hand-picked mulberry leaves and aged in small batches.

The first and only batch of the gin had just 25 litres and took two years to make and is distilled with the dried leaves of a single 100-year-old mulberry tree.

The gin is now sold exclusively at Harvey Nichols.
