The MP for Oldham West, Chadderton, and Royton has praised the "package of measures" aimed at supporting veterans.
Jim McMahon said the initiatives introduced in recent weeks demonstrate that under a Labour government, veterans "finally have a government which is on their side".
The measures, introduced by both the Labour-led council and the central government, aim to ensure "veterans are treated with dignity".
This includes the introduction of the Armed Forces Commissioner Bill, which provides the commissioner with new powers to investigate general service welfare matters in the armed forces.
Other measures include the approval of the HM Armed Forces Veteran Card as voter ID.
The council and Oldham Active have also worked together to provide borough-wide discounts for veterans at leisure centres.
The government has also announced the "Homes for Heroes Scheme", which will deliver £3.7m in capital housing grants for veterans.
Mr McMahon said: "When I laid a wreath on the War Memorial at the Oldham Remembrance Service, I felt a great sense of honour in joining faith and civic leaders to pay our respects to those who have given so much for our country and for future generations.
"I felt this same honour when I placed a stake in Parliament’s Gardens of Remembrance for the Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton constituency.
"While it is important to reflect on the past, we must make sure we do our bit now for those who have returned from and continue risking their lives to fight for our nation, for freedom and for democracy.
"Our Labour government understands this, which is why we have committed £3.5m for a dedicated wraparound service for veterans at risk of or experiencing homelessness and makes sure they have access to specialist support for employment and independent living.
"As can also be seen with the new Bill introduced to Parliament, the Veteran Voter ID changes, the Oldham leisure centre discounts and the Homes for Heroes Scheme, Labour are taking practical measures which will have a material impact on the lives of veterans.
"Under a Labour government, veterans can be sure that they will be protected, honoured, and respected in the way that they deserve."
