A yellow weather warning for snow and ice in Oldham has been issued by the Met Office as the borough braces for winter conditions.

Starting at 7pm tonight (Monday, November 18) and ending at 10am tomorrow (Tuesday, November 19), the borough is set to see a spell of snow and sleet.

According to the Met Office, a period of rain, sleet and snow will occur during Monday evening, overnight into Tuesday morning.

The national weather service has issued Oldham with a yellow weather warning and has warned that there could be travel delays and potential power cuts.

Oldhamers have been warned to prepare for the following circumstances:

  • Possible travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers
  • Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • Possible delays or cancellations to rail and air travel
  • A chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Some rural communities could become cut off
  • Bus and train services may be delayed or cancelled, with some road closures and longer journey times possible

The Met Office says the most likely scenario is for most of the snow to accumulate on hills, with 5cm to 10cm possible above 200 metres and as much as 15cm to 20cm above 300 metres.

There is a chance of snow settling at lower levels, where 5cm to 10 cm would be much more disruptive, however this remains uncertain, but seems most likely across parts of Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

As rain, sleet and snow clear on Tuesday morning, ice may form on untreated surfaces.

The Met Office has warned motorists to plan their route, check for delays and road closures, set off earlier than usual and to have essentials in their car in case of delays.
