A borough road will be closed for a few weeks to allow for gas works to take place as part of an £80m project.

Network Cadent Gas will be carrying out the work, which will see around 60m of the gas distribution pipe network replaced.

The work is part of a wider scheme which is seeing around 420km of ageing gas pipelines be replaced across the North West.

Cadent said that in Oldham alone, there is around 8km of pipes that will be replaced.

The latest road which will see excavations of pipes carried out as part of the replacement works is Chapel Street in Royton.

The road will be closed from Wednesday, November 20 and will not reopen until Friday, December 13.

While the work site is located near to Royton Medical Centre, Cadent says patients and staff will still be able to access the site, as the entrance is on Thorp Road, and anyone arriving by foot will still be able to walk along the street.

Cadent also added that the closure is required to protect the safety of the workers while the replacement is carried out.

A spokesperson: "This work is part of our £80m investment this year to upgrade around 420km of ageing gas pipes in the North West.

"In Oldham specifically, we are upgrading nearly 8km of pipes this year.

"This is to keep gas flowing safely, now and long into the future, to help keep people warm in their homes.

"The work in Chapel Street involves us replacing around 60 metres of gas distribution pipe, which is underneath the road.

"To access it, we need to close the road, as there is insufficient space for us to work there and have traffic passing too. A short diversion will be signposted.

"Access to the medical centre car park is not affected (the car park entrance/ exit is not on Chapel Street).

"Pedestrians can still walk up and down Chapel Street, so the pedestrian access to the medical centre is also unaffected.

"We will maintain access for the residents who live on Chapel Street."
