A firm feature of Oldham town centre's landscape could be set for a major redevelopment following the submission of a planning application.
Phoenix House, which sits on Union Street, previously operated as an office building for the Department for Work and Pensions before its closure in 2022.
Since then, the building has been unoccupied, however a proposal has now been submitted to develop the building into more than 80 flats.

Planning documents show that, in total, there would be 82 apartments which would be a mix of one and two-bedroom units, although the majority would be one-bedroom units.
Along with at least one bedroom, each flat would have a bathroom and a kitchen/living area.

According to design plans submitted by Nick Carroll Architects, the existing staircases and lifts would be protected as part of the redevelopment.
There is car parking space both at the front and to the rear of the building, however the documents submitted so far do not state whether or not these would be reserved for potential future residents.
Planning documents submitted in recent weeks only concern the layout of the building, with a statement on the proposed redevelopment yet to be shared publicly.
