An injured walker had to be rescued by the mountain rescue team from the moors above Oldham.
On Wednesday afternoon, Oldham Mountain Rescue Team was contacted by Greater Manchester Police regarding a walker who had injured his ankle near the popular Raven Stones Trinnacle landmark.
Team vehicles were mobilised to the track end at Greenfield Brook. The team then made its way up the steep slope to the Trinnacle carrying equipment to deal with the incident.
Neighbouring team, Holme Valley Mountain Rescue, was called to assist. On locating the casualty, an OMRT medical technician assessed the ankle injury before applying a vacuum splint to make it more comfortable.
Due to the location, injury and temperature, the team requested assistance from the coastguard to extricate the casualty from the hillside.
Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the crew was unable to reach the scene, hampered by low clouds across the Pennines. This meant a long stretcher carry-off.
It was dark by the time the stretcher team reached the waiting North West Ambulance Service at the reservoir track. A quick handover to the crew was carried out, before the ambulance made its way to the hospital.
Twelve Oldham Mountain Rescue Team members, 10 Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team members and one Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team member were involved for four hours.
