A first look at Oldham actress Sarah Lancashire in the upcoming Netflix spy thriller series Black Doves has been released.

It was first announced last year that the 60-year-old would be featuring in the six-part series, which stars Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw.

Now, Netflix has released the first trailer and pictures of the show, in which Lancashire will play a spymaster called Reed.

According to an article on Netflix's website, Black Doves is a "sharp, action-filled, and heartfelt story of friendship and sacrifice" set in London around the Christmas period.

The article says that Lancashire described the character in her own words as a "spy mistress working for the Black Doves", who recruits Knightley's character, Helen, "in good faith", however, Helen is "a bit of a loose cannon".

In the action-packed trailer, Lancashire's character is seen telling Knightley's character about the death of a man, which sparks Knightley and Whishaw's characters uncovering a vast, interconnected conspiracy linking the murky London underworld to a looming geopolitical crisis.

The series will be available to watch on Netflix from December 5.

The role will be Lancashire's first appearance on screen since winning Best Actress at the BAFTA awards in May earlier this year.

Series writer Joe Barton, who was a screenwriter for TV thriller Giri/Haji and sci-fi series The Lazarus Project, said: “I started writing the scripts for this show over last year’s Christmas holidays, fuelled by turkey sandwiches and discarded bottles of cream liqueur.

“To be now going into production with a cast and crew full of people whose work I admire so much is unbelievably exciting and I couldn’t be more thrilled to get to see this show come to life.”

The show also stars Carnival Row’s Andrew Buchan, Bullet Train actor Andrew Koji, Chernobyl’s Sam Troughton, The Diplomat star Adam Silver and In My Skin actress Gabrielle Creevy.
