Oldham Council have issued an update on the future of a park which was recently dubbed the 'most depressing park ever' on social media.

A Facebook post made to a Royton community group saw a resident searching for answers on the future of a park and also said they believed Oldham Council were building a new park

Attached was a photo Wendlebury Green Playground containing a slide, a single baby swing, a small piece of climbing equipment and a bench.

One comment on the post said: "I hope so. There's no slide there anymore.

"Most depressing park ever."

Oldham Council have now confirmed that work will soon begin on the construction of a new park.

Cllr Chris Goodwin, whose portfolio covers parks and greenspaces, said: "Oldham Council is home to some of the best parks and greenspaces around.

"We are always looking to improve them as we know how important they are to residents of all ages.

"Last year ward councillors listened to members of the local community put together a successful bid for £25,000 of funding from our Local Improvement Fund to pay towards improving Wendlebury Green.

"We are really pleased to let residents know our teams will soon start work on site.

"We are installing a new large climbing frame which includes a slide.

"We’ll also be carrying out repairs to the existing pieces of play equipment.

"There may be some disruption when the work is carried out but once it’s finished it’ll feel like a new place for children and families to enjoy.”

With a total of 28, Oldham's parks have been judged as some of the best in England with two winning Green Flag awards, Dunwood Park and Alexandra Park, according to Visit Oldham.

The site also says that Alexandra Park is one of only 30 open spaces in the North West to become a grade two heritage site.
