The site of a former Oldham nursery which moved premises earlier this year will now become a housing development after plans were approved.

An application for prior approval has been granted by Oldham Council to make the former site of Medlock Day Nursery, on Ashton Road, into 10 flats.

The nursery registered its new site as Lee Street in January this year and the building it previously occupied having been empty for at least three months prior to the application's submission.

All 10 flats fall within the requirement to have a floor area of at least 37 square metres set for one person one-bed flats which have a shower room rather than a bathroom.

The smallest flat will have a floorspace of 37.3 square feet in flat eight and the largest will be 51.7 in flat three, according to the proposed floor plans.

The development will also create a single parking space for each flat, nine of which will be single occupancy and one will be double.

Oldham Council found that prior approval was needed before work could commence and granted it on Monday, October 21.

No objections were received in relation to the plans and the planning officer said: "The proposal relates to a building in a sustainable location, it is unlikely to generate a significant increase in traffic due to its location.

"The building is detached and the area contains a number of mixed uses, it is not uncommon for residential properties to feature in small local centres and such noise from commercial premises is not a concern in this instance."

Assessments by the officer of the plans also found that all the habitants would have access to a sufficient amount of natural light as each flat would be served by a large window.

The proposal does not require much external work to the building, with the only change outlined in the application being nine existing window and door opening to be bricked up on the ground floor.

All the flats would also have use of an existing communal staircase and entrances.
