Three-way traffic signals are causing 'carnage' outside a Royton pub, according to residents.

Oldham Council said the signals will be in place for three to four weeks while major building work is carried out on The Puckersley Inn.

The roadworks are classified as low impact on the Greater Manchester roadworks website but a local social media page, I love High Crompton, dubbed the works 'carnage'.

Commenters claimed they had been stuck in the roadworks, with one person claiming they saw 'impatient' drivers running the red lights while they had been walking past.

The signals are in place at Thornham Road, Castleton Road and Narrowgate Brow and Google traffic shows they are causing traffic to move at the slowest rate available on the site.

Comparison between typical traffic on a Thursday at around 3.50pm and the live traffic at that time, shows the drastic change in the flow of vehicles.

On Castleton Road, the traffic looks to be affected as far back as the Gravel Hole Methodist Church, around half a mile away.

Oldham Council said the signals have been put in place due to the narrow nature of the roads and pavements in the area.

They said that for the safety of both passing pedestrians and motorists, the decision was made to limit the flow of traffic.

The Puckersley Inn is a pub which belongs to Manchester-founded brewery, J.W. Lees.

J.W. Lees was approached for comment on the building works.

Advice from the DVLA's Safe Driving for Life website, advises people to avoid roadworks if possible and to plan journeys ahead in the hope of finding an alternative route.

It also suggests to keep up to date with current roadworks, drivers should utilise the traffic and travel information on the internet as well as local and national radio.
