A dedicated group of volunteers, who support people looking after family members and loved ones with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, have been given a welcome boost.

When Dr Eamonn O’Daly first moved to Saddleworth he said he learned from personal experience that there was little support for those who cared for ageing and infirm family members in the area.

He created the Saddleworth Carers Group with a mission to provide respite and mutual support for those, mostly family members, who found themselves caring for ageing relatives in later life.

That was 17 years ago, and with Alzheimer’s and dementia on the increase, support needs have grown year on year.

Today, assisted by volunteers, Dr O’Daly continues to be a key figure in the Saddleworth Carers Group which now supports more than 50 carers.

And, at fortnightly meetings, the group are entertained by a relevant speaker, share coffee and lunch in company of others, providing the opportunity for respite and social interaction.

Potential group members are recommended from sources including the local medical centre and others contact the group when they are in need.

All of this comes at a cost and Saddleworth Carers Group rely almost entirely on donations to continue their valuable work in the community.

Now, appreciating how essential the carers services are locally, Saddleworth Rotary Club members have made a £1,500 donation to help with the group’s running cost over the coming year.

Clint Elliott, Saddleworth Rotary Club president, said: “We are hoping to form a closer alliance with the carers group to assist them over the next few years to help ensure they can continue to operate as their services are likely to be more and more in demand.”

Responding to the donation, Marilyn Davies of Saddleworth Carers Group, said: ”I want to extend our gratitude for your generous donation. Your support is invaluable to us and makes a difference in our efforts to continue with our aim to help carers and those they care for.

“Thanks to your contribution we are able to provide a variety of events for our members, including trips and meals out, speakers and a lunch at every meeting.

"We look forward to keeping you updated on our progress and the difference your donation is making,”
