Several residents in Royton have slammed the use of temporary traffic lights on a major road which they claim have been left 'for a week' without any works being carried out.

According to Transport for Greater Manchester, two-way signals were put up on Rochdale Road at the junction of Oozewood Road on September 17.

However, residents in the area say the lights were due to be removed on September 24 - but are still in use and are causing major "disruption" more than two weeks later.

The works allegedly range from repairing a lamppost on a traffic island to reports of a sinkhole, however, residents say they haven't seen any work being carried out since the lights were installed.

One resident reported the incident to Fix My Street, claiming "no work" has been carried out around the three-way traffic lights.

The report added: "As this is a major road, I hope the company involved will incur a fine for failure to take action as a priority."

Several others have since taken to social media to voice their thoughts about the situation.

A woman said she had not seen anyone working at all in the area and that "there is no hole in the road".

She added: "Just why."

Another agreed: "It is a royal pain in the backside at present."

The notice on TfGM says the work, which falls under Oldham Council's responsibility, is due to be finished on Friday, October 4, this week - which would make the work 10 days overdue.

At the same time, Cadent Gas is due to carry out work on Rochdale Road from Friday, October 4, until March 31 next year, though there are no traffic controls planned.

Oldham Council has been contacted for comment.
