Major changes to two car parks in Oldham town centre have been announced, with one car park set to close down for good this week.

Oldham Council has shared on social media that the old sports centre car park, off Rock Street, and the Bradshaw Street car park based behind Summit Up are the two which will be affected.

The old sports centre car park will permanently close down on Friday (September 27) due to the ongoing redevelopment of the town centre.

In total, 123 parking spaces will be lost, with the plan being that the land will become 250 apartments in a series of L-shaped blocks, along with a section of the "linear park" – a green space that will run across the entire length of the town.

Meanwhile, the changes at the Bradshaw Street car park will see a temporary loss of 87 parking spaces.

A section of the car park behind Summit Up is being closed off so it can be used as a site compound for ongoing works taking place to improve streets and public areas around the town centre.

These works include the new garden near Oldham Parish Church and the works at the former Snipe Inn.

As a result, the capacity of the car park will go from 142 to 55, which will include five disabled bays. The car park will return to full capacity once the remedial works, which are already underway, are completed.

The council said that to separate the car park users from site traffic, a new entrance will be created, which will be slightly further down from the existing entrance.

Due to these works, the council said a tree would have to be removed, however it has ensured three more will be planted in its place as new areas of the town centre are landscaped.

The council apologised for any inconvenience.
