A former funeral parlour is set to become a house in multiple occupation (HMO) after plans were approved.

An application was submitted to Oldham Council regarding a vacant building on Ashton Road in Bardsley back in May, which looked to turn the detached structure into a 10-bedroom HMO.

However, amended plans looked to make it a seven-bedroom HMO along with one residential apartment.

Now, this proposal has been given the green light and the plans can go ahead.

The plans for the vacant building show the basement will serve as the apartment, with one bedroom, along with a kitchen and a lounge, while the ground floor will have two bedrooms, a kitchen, a lounge area, and two bathrooms.

Meanwhile, the first floor will have five bedrooms and a small kitchen. All of the bedrooms will have an en-suite facility.

The plans originally stated that the site had last served as a nursery, but this was amended to a funeral parlour by the applicant.

Several letters of objection were left on the application, which raised concerns over the impact the HMO would have on local services, the impact on the character of the area and parking.

However, the planning officer felt the HMO would be in keeping with the character of the area and that car ownership amongst residents of HMOs is typically low.

A concern was raised by the council's Environmental Health officer, who felt one of the kitchens would not meet the minimum size requirement.

However, it was felt that the fact the property would have two kitchens for the HMO residents meant the kitchen space would be adequate for residents.

The application was formally approved on Thursday, September 12.
