A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson and assault after a fire engulfed a hotel in Middleton.

A fire ripped through The Assheton Arms Hotel in the early hours this morning (Sunday, September 15).

A passer-by said people were "clearly in distress" as emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 12.15am, including eight fire engines from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) as well as ambulances and police.

The fire service confirmed its crews worked for hours to extinguish the fire and one casualty was taken to hospital, though it is believed there were no serious injuries.

Now, Greater Manchester Police has confirmed officers made an arrest in connection with the fire.

A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of arson and assault.

The force said: "At around 12.15am this morning (Sunday, September 15), we were called to reports of a fire at a hotel on Market Place in Middleton.

"Emergency services attended and arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of arson and assault.

"He remains in police custody for questioning.

"Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, and investigations are ongoing."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "Shortly before 12:15am this morning (15 September 2024), eight fire engines from across Greater Manchester were called to the scene of a fire at a commercial building on Market Place, Middleton.

“Crews arrived quickly and worked overnight to extinguish the fire.

"Firefighters used six breathing apparatus, three hose reels, a thermal imaging camera and two nine-metre ladders.

“All casualties were transferred into the care of North West Ambulance Service and one casualty has been conveyed to hospital.

"Crews remain in attendance at this time to monitor the premises and ensure the area is safe.”

The North West Ambulance Service has also been contacted for comment.
