Residents in Shaw are celebrating 'fantastic news' as a new Jamaican takeaway is opening today to replace the former Masterchef Indian takeaway.

In April this year, Shaw's longest-running Indian takeaway on Glebe Street announced "with great sadness" that it had closed its doors "for good".

Masterchef opened in 1991 and was run by the same family in the decades that followed.

However, the owner said he had to close the premises for health reasons.

He wrote in a post on Facebook: "After 32 years, I’ve had to hang my apron up due to my health and I need to do what’s best for me.

"I sincerely hope you all understand that I did not take this decision lightly as I have put my heart and soul for the past 32 years into making Masterchef the best it could be.

"My mum and dad created Masterchef in 1991 and I started working there when I was 16.

"Now 32 years later, I can say thank you so much to every single one of you for your loyal custom, for all the laughs, the happy memories but most of all your friendship and support as I will carry this with me for the rest of my life."

At the time, residents said they were "gutted" to see the takeaway close as they described it as "one of the best".

Now, a new venture has opened in its place.

Angie's Taste of Jamaica announced it will open its doors today (Saturday, September 14), as of 4pm.

Shaw is already celebrating the "fantastic news" with many saying it is "nice to have something different" in the area.

A resident said he would "definitely" be trying it as he used to travel "halfway to Manchester for a decent Jamaican takeaway".

Another said: "Masterchef was great but things moved on. I think this might be the best alternative."

A third wrote: "At last, a bit of variety!"

Others also said they had tasted Angie's food before, and described it as "authentic and tasty" and "wow".
