A cafe and restaurant situated on public grounds is looking to extend its opening hours, with a decision set to be made next week.

The Grandpa Greene's restaurant at the King George V Playing Fields on Wade Row, Uppermill, opened in June last year after a divisive planning application was approved.

The restaurant, called Green's Bistro and Parlour, was developed where former public toilets were based and has been serving customers for more than a year now.

On Wednesday (September 18), Oldham Council's planning committee will meet to decide on plans to extend the opening hours on certain days.

As it stands, the restaurant is allowed to open between the hours of 9am and 7pm each day of the week, including Bank Holidays, although the doors are currently open between 9.30am and 5pm on weekdays and 9.30am to 5.30pm on weekends.

Now, the restaurant has applied to continue to be allowed to open from 9am to 7pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, but is looking to operate between 9am and 9.30pm from Thursday to Sunday in order to take advantage of evening trade.

An application report prepared by an Oldham Council planning officer has shown that the planning committee will be recommended to approve the application.

The report states that no formal noise complaints have been made to the council's Environmental Health department since Greene's Bistro opened.

Several comments from residents have been left on the application, objecting to it largely on the basis of increased noise.

However, the report says although there may be some increase in noise, "it would not be dissimilar to activity that already exists in Uppermill especially during the night-time economy".

One condition of approval is that no deliveries can be made to the restaurant before 8am or after 9pm from Monday to Saturday, with no deliveries permitted whatsoever on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Many people objected to the original plans to develop the restaurant due to concerns including a loss of space, parking, noise and litter.
