A junction with a major Oldham road was closed during rush hour yesterday evening after a car caught fire in a popular pub car park.
At around 4.15pm, Greater Manchester Police were called to assist the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service after a car caught fire.
According to GMP, the car caught fire in the car park of The Royal George pub.
The police force said in a post to social media last night: "A road closure is currently in place due to a car fire caused by mechanical issues on the Huddersfield Road junction with Manchester Road, in the Greenfield area of Oldham."
They also advised residents to avoid the area to prevent delays.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 4.20pm yesterday (Tuesday, September 3) one fire engine from Mossley Community Fire Station was called to reports of a car on fire on Manchester Road, Greenfield.
“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel to extinguish the fire and make the surrounding area safe. Crews were in attendance for around 40 minutes.”
In a comment to The Oldham Times, a spokesperson for GMP said: "At around 4:15pm, we were called by GMFRS to assist with scene management/ road closures.
"The fire was extinguished and no injuries."
Police said the car was a BMW but it could not confirm the model of the vehicle.
North West Ambulance Service has also been approached for comment.
