Some Saddleworth residents saw smoke as firefighters took on an incident in the Peak District National Park.
The West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) attended Acres Lane, West Yorkshire, on Saturday.
The WYFRS website said firefighters from six fire stations (Cleckheaton, Dewsbury, Halifax, Huddersfield, Rastrick, Slaithwaite) took on the incident in the Peak District National Park close to Bilberry Reservoir and Digley Reservoir. Some Saddleworth residents saw smoke from around 10 miles away.
A post on social media by one of the fire stations, Slaithwaite Fire Station, said they were working into Sunday.

The WYFRS website said: "A large fire front - no need for alarm - avoid the area if possible."
The Oldham Times approached the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service for a comment.
