Safety improvements are to be made to a "dangerous" junction which is prone to car crashes.

The improvements will be made to the junction of High Street and Hartshead Street in Lees following a push from Cllr Sam Al-Hamdani, who represents the Saddleworth West and Lees ward.

Following a number of crashes at the junction, the council has now agreed to lay an improved anti-skid surface on the road, repaint the markings, and add signage to warn drivers about the junction.

Cllr Al-Hamdani said: “This is clearly a dangerous location, and I’m pleased that the council has responded to my requests and acknowledged that more should be done.

“Given the pinch point where buildings on both sides mean that the pavements are narrow, it does make things difficult – this is not a perfect solution, but it is another step in the right direction.”

Cllr Chris Goodwin, cabinet lead for highways and engineering, said: “We take the safety of all road users and pedestrians in our borough very seriously and we are always looking at new and enhanced measures where possible to improve this so people feel safe.

“After listening to local concerns regarding the junction of High Street and Hartshead Street in Lees, the council will be enhancing existing measures in the area to address this matter.

“This includes laying an improved anti-skid surface at the junction in question which will last longer, alongside the reinforcement of existing road markings and a display of additional signage to alert road users.

The works are part of a number of safety initiatives being driven forward by councillors, with a 20mph section to be added to Stamford Road in Lees, and a new trial School Street in Medlock Way due to go live next week.

Cllr Al-Hamdani added: “We’re very aware that Saddleworth has poor public transport, and that for many, there is no alternative to cars. What we want is to ensure that the area is safer for all users – drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

“If we can make it easier and safer for people to walk and cycle, that means less pollution, more healthy people, and fewer accidents. And if fewer people are driving, that reduces traffic congestion too. These are positives all round.”

Cllr Goodwin added that any members of the public who would like to report a problem on the borough's roads or payments can do so by visiting the council's website at oldham.gov.uk/highways.
