School teacher and fundraising extraordinaire Steve Hill MBE has completed his second "extremely tough" challenge of the summer after climbing five volcanoes in Guatemala.

The deputy head at St Joseph's RC Primary School in Shaw and the founder of the Team Hill Charitable Trust completed a five-marathon challenge through Mongolia earlier this month.

However, after a short turnaround, he was off to Guatemala to take on the "Ring of Fire" challenge which saw him climb five of Central America's highest peaks.

Steve said: "The Guatemala leg of my challenge was extremely tough on the back of the five marathons in Mongolia.

"Climbing five consecutive mountains at altitude was a real challenge - but the views and sunrises at the summits made it all worthwhile."

The challenge saw Steve climbing thousands of meters to the summits whilst carrying gear and camping overnight.

Steve said: "The difficulties were a lack of sleep and rest, the tough terrain on the side of the mountains and the altitude."

Coming off the back of the marathon challenge in Mongolia, Steve said it was "hard to say" which challenge was tougher but that "the mountains just edged it".

Steve tackled the challenges to push himself but also raise money for the Team Hill Charitable Trust, with his summer challenges raising more than £9,000 so far.

Steve also takes on the challenges to inspire his students and he said: "I hope that taking on these challenges this summer will help to show my pupils that when you believe in yourself, work hard and don't give up when things get tough, anything is possible.

"I look forward to sharing my summer adventures with the children next week when the new school year starts."

Steve also thanked everyone who sent him messages of support, which he said kept him going when the challenge got tough.
