Fire crews were called out to a blaze at a derelict industrial building in Saddleworth, near Dovestone Reservoir, today (Monday, August 26) as a large plume of smoke filled the sky.

Firefighters were initially called out shortly before 4pm to reports of a fire at a building near the popular beauty spot.

Several fire engines attended the scene, as well as a turntable ladder and the drone unit, to put out the fire, which took firefighters a number of hours.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 3.45pm on Monday 26 August, fire crews were called to reports of a fire at a derelict industrial building off Holmfirth Road, Saddleworth.

“Five fire engines from Oldham, Chadderton, Stalybridge, Hollins, Ashton and Hyde stations, as well as a turntable ladder and the drone unit, were quickly mobilised to the incident.

“Firefighters used two jets to extinguish the fire. Crews remain in attendance dampening down the remaining hotspots.”

Pictures and videos shared on social media showed a large plume of dark smoke coming from the building near Greenfield.

Residents in the area were told to keep their windows and doors shut as the fire raged.

There were no reports of any casualties by the time GMFRS confirmed the fire was out shortly after 8pm.
