United Utilities has provided an update after a burst water pipe caused Rochdale Road to be closed off due to water flooding the street yesterday (August 23).

The water company have said disruption will likely last for 'several days' as repairs are needed on the road and pavement.

A United Utilities spokesperson said: "Our engineers worked throughout the day and night and the burst pipe was repaired in the early hours of this morning.

"Water supplies were restored to customers in stages and all had water by around 3am.

"There is still some work to be done to repair the road and pavement which was damaged by the burst and we expect this will take several more days.

"The temporary traffic lights will stay in place until that is complete.

"We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused and we thank customers for their patience."

The disruption was caused by a burst water pipe on Rochdale Road, just outside the entrance to Royal Oldham Hospital.

Large amounts of water flooded through the street, covering the road and sections of the pavement.

The road was closed on Thursday while engineers worked to isolate and repair the problem.

Closures were also in place around the hospital with one of the largest car parks at the site inaccessible to cars and security teams directing traffic away from the area.

Greater Manchester Police were also on the scene to ensure traffic remained off the road and allowed access to a small number of vehicles for essential reasons.
