A student who was displaced by the Russian invasion of Ukraine has received top grades in his A-levels in Oldham.

Myhailo Tolstikhin only came to England in April 2022 and yet has managed to overcome the challenges he faced and secure top grades at Oldham Sixth Form College.

Having lived in Mariupol until he was 16, he had to move after the Russian invasion of Ukraine meant his home was unsafe.

Receiving his results this morning (August 15) the 18-year-old has been awarded an A* in further maths, as well as A's in maths and physics.

Mykhailo's first choice was Cambridge University, which is currently considering offering him a place in their civil engineering degree after his grades narrowly missed his offer.

He has however been accepted into Russel Group University, The University Of Manchester for a civil engineering degree.

Mykhailo said: "I lived in Mariupol for 16 and a half years and when I had to leave, I didn't know I'd ever be studying at Oldham Sixth Form College or that I'd be applying to Cambridge.

"Because I didn't get the required grade for physics, they need more time to decide.

"I should have a definite answer by tomorrow evening or earlier, so fingers crossed."

If Mykhailo is accepted to Cambridge, It means he will be able to study alongside his friend Joshua Tindall, who achieved four A*s in maths, further maths, physics and electronics and has been accepted into the engineering degree.

Joshua said: "The course gives me the opportunity to explore different fields, it's a four years course and I'll gain a masters in engineering, but after that I'm not too sure.

"I want to do something big, something cutting edge."

Oldham Sixth Form College achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in the majority of their courses, with 1,800 students awarded A*s and A grades or equivalent.
