Oldham students have achieved top A-level grades and secured spots at some of the UK's best universities.

Students across Oldham colleges and sixth forms received their results today, with many gaining top grades and successfully accepting offers to their first choice university. 

At Crompton House Sixth form, over 90 per cent of students were accepted into their first or insurance choice of university, with 42 per cent of pupils achieving at least one A* or A grade.

The sixth form also saw 75 per cent of grades awarded being A*-C.

One of their top achievers, Amy Jakeman, achieved three A*s and one A, and is heading to London to complete a a six-year degree apprenticeship with a top law firm, Osborne Clarke. 

Amy said: "It's a bit scary but I think the apprenticeship gives a really good grounding for practicing law.

"You complete eight different seats, so you get to rotate and do everything to see which is your best area, so I'm going in with an open mind and seeing what type of law I gravitate to."

Elsewhere, at Oldham Sixth Form College, students were invited to a celebration event where they could share their results with their friends and discuss where they would be attending.

The college saw the majority of courses gaining a 100 per cent pass rate with 1,800 A* or A grades and equivalent being awarded to their students.

They said the number of students holding university offers is at an 'all time high'.

One of those students, Mykhailo Tolstikhin, only came to England in April 2022, after his home town in Mariupol became unsafe after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. 

Despite having to overcome the tremendous challenges of the conflict and relocating to another country, Mykhailo has secured an A* in further maths and two As in maths and physics.

Fellow OSFC student Joshua Tindall, who gained four A*'s in maths, further maths, physics and electronics and will also study engineering as has been accepted to Cambridge University.

Joshua said: "The course gives me the opportunity to explore different fields, it's a four-year course and I'll gain a masters in engineering, but after that I'm not too sure.

"I want to do something big, something cutting edge."

Oldham Hulme Grammar School also received 'extremely impressive' results, with 20 per cent of grades being A*s and 75 per cent of students were accepted to their first choice university. 

Principal Tony Oulton said: “To say we are proud of this year’s cohort is a massive understatement.

“We are delighted but unsurprised at these results, having witnessed the hard work and tenacity of our students and because of the exceptional support they have received from our staff.”

North Chadderton School also saw high levels from its students with 34 per cent receiving A* to A grades or distinctions, 53 per cent of all grades achieving a minimum of a B and 80 per cent being grade C or above.

Also announcing high grades was The Blue Coat School which had just under a third of all grades awarded at A* to A and 60 per cent at A* to B meaning students from the college are now progressing to some of the most competitive courses.

Headteacher Rob Higgins said: "We are absolutely delighted with the results achieved by our students.

"Once again, our young people have achieved fantastic grades meaning that they can all progress to the next stage of their journey and pursue the future careers and professions that they have always dreamed of."
