An Oldham teenager is preparing to compete in the World Muaythai Championships next year.

Daniel Ferris, 16, is a fighter in Muaythai, also known as Thai boxing, which is a martial art and full-contact combat sport.

The Hathershaw College student took up the sport at the age of nine at his local club, Isaan Gym, and is now getting some help to get to the World Championships in Thailand next year.

Daniel has already achieved British, Celtic and two Novice titles in Muaythai and in March, he was selected to represent Team GB at the 2024 World Championships in Thailand, where he won the silver medal in his weight category.

As he now prepares for the World Championships in March 2025, where he hopes to win a gold medal, Daniel has received sponsorship from house-building company Vistry Group, one of the UK’s leading provider of affordable mixed tenure homes.

Daniel’s father, Chris, is an assistant site manager for Vistry at its Countryside Homes’ Hartshead View development in Oldham.

The sponsorship will enable Daniel to continue training four times a week in preparation, as well as covering the cost of travel and accommodation for the tournament as athletes' journey to the World Championships is completely self-funded.

Vistry Group's partnership with Daniel, who was recently recognised for his sporting achievements at the Oldham Rotary Club Student of the Year awards, will extend beyond the sponsorship.

The aspiring electrician has already secured an electrical apprenticeship with DDG Plumbing and Heating Solutions LTD and DDG Electrical LTD and after he completes his GCSEs, he will be working at the Hartshead View development in Fitton Hill, which is being delivered by Countryside Homes, part of Vistry Group.

Joe Turner, managing director for Manchester and Cheshire East at Vistry, said: “Daniel’s achievements in his sporting career have been amazing, and we’re proud to be supporting him as he continues to progress towards securing the ultimate title of world champion.

"Muaythai is one of many sports that is underfunded and relies on sponsorship, which is why we’re more than happy to make it possible for Daniel to have the opportunity to represent his country at a sport he loves.

“In addition to his Muaythai skills, it’s great to see Daniel pursue a career in the built environment sector with his apprenticeship.

"Apprenticeships are a fantastic way for people to learn whilst on the job and see first-hand what’s involved in the role. We look forward to welcoming Daniel to our site team at Hartshead View and supporting him in achieving his sporting and career goals.”
