A man has been charged in connection with a 'serious assault' which took place in Oldham town centre and left a man in 'critical condition' after the Euros final.

At around 4.14am on Monday (July 15), emergency services responded to reports that a man had been assaulted outside the Old Bank pub on Yorkshire Street.

Police say the victim has been fighting for his life in hospital in critical condition since the attack.

The man, named locally as father-of-four, Ray Logan, suffered bleeding on the brain and has been in a medically induced coma.

The 40-year-old had gone to Oldham to watch England play in the UEFA Euros final against Spain.

A GoFundMe to help Ray's family has raised more than £14,000 at the time of writing.

Yorkshire Street was closed the next day as a large police cordon stretched from Waterloo Street to Horsedge Street whilst officers conducted their enquiries.

Police say they have now charged a 36-year-old man in connection with their investigation into the assault.

Sebastian Jones from Oldham has been charged with grievous bodily harm.

He was remanded and appeared before Tameside Magistrates Court on Tuesday (July 23).

At the time of the attack, Detective Inspector Andy Day, of our Oldham District, said: “This is a serious incident in which the victim of this assault remains in a critical condition in hospital.

“We are now appealing for people to come forward and help our investigation – no piece of information is too small."

A social media post appealing for donations also said: "As some of you are aware Ray is in a critical condition in hospital Ray has two amazing teenage sons, and two beautiful young daughters who absolutely adore their daddy.

"Understandably this is a difficult and worrying time for everybody and I please urge people to be mindful of the conversations they may be having around children.

"Unfortunately the direct debits don't come to a halt, so if you can spare a couple of quid to help take the financial stress away anything will be greatly appreciated."
