Oldham Council has shared a warning from Trading Standards to Royton residents after reports of a rogue trader.

It says that people, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, should be aware of potential cold callers offering driveway cleaning and repair work.

The warning reads: "When a trader offers to carry out work at a property and gives a quote, the tenant is normally entitled to a 14 day cancellation period. This should all be included in a written quote, along with full details of the business name, address and identity.

"The trader operating in Royton that has done work at a number of addresses and has not provided this information – meaning people can’t get in touch if there is an issue."

Oldham Council urged any residents who are concerned they may have fallen victim to this potential scammer to contact the council's partner, Citizens Advice, with this form or call 0808 223 1133.

They also advised that if a rogue trader has taken your money or you are targeted by a distraction burglar and they are still in the area, to call 999.

A distraction burglar will attempt to gain entry into a person's home by pretending to need help or be officials in the area, such as a charity worker or tradesmen.

They stated that the safest way to find a trader to carry out work, is to avoid buying on the doorstep and instead use the recommendations of trusted friends and family members.

Alternatively there are various trusted buyer schemes, including Trading Standards' ‘Buy With Confidence’ scheme.

To find a trader with the scheme, visit www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk

Vulnerable people, such as the elderly, are at a particular risk from these scams.

Some of the common ruses include offering driveway repairs or cleaning.
