A man is fighting for his life in hospital after a "serious assault" in Oldham town centre.

Police say a man was assaulted by another male at around 4.14am on Monday outside the Old Bank pub on Yorkshire Street.

The victim remains in hospital in a critical condition, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has said.

Yorkshire Street was closed the following day, with a large police cordon erected on the street – stretching from Waterloo Street to Horsedge Street.

No arrests have been made.

Officers say they are now appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the assault to come forward and assist their investigation.

Detective Inspector Andy Day, of GMP’s Oldham District, said: “This is a serious incident in which the victim of this assault remains in a critical condition in hospital.

“We are now appealing for people to come forward and help our investigation – no piece of information is too small.
